Work with the Association

The Association typically hires at the end of the academic year (March-April) for positions for the following year. Occasionally, other opportunities will arise throughout the year. Opportunities will be listed below and organized by due date.

Associate Vice President Openings (3)

The application period is open. Applications are due by 11:59pm EST on Friday, 15 January 2021.

ASG is hiring three Associate Vice Presidents (AVPs) for the 2020-2021 academic year. AVPs receive a stipend of $500 ($100 per month from January to May) and opportunities to develop a professional network and engage in meaningful policy advocacy for students across the system. We offer support for any initiatives which AVPs are interested in pursuing. Work hours are highly flexible.

AVPs work with a specific Vice President (VP) to assist in overseeing the department. Job responsibilities will vary depending on the Department for which an applicant applies. Some general responsibilities are listed below, followed by examples of Department-specific work.

Job Responsibilities

Because of the ongoing pandemic, much of the Association’s work this year will be conducted remotely. ASG is organized into committees comprising seventeen members (one from each of the seventeen UNC System schools). AVPs will help to communicate with and coordinate the work of the members of their respective committees. This necessarily includes some administrative work (e.g. scheduling meetings and drafting agendas) but will primarily center on managing programs administered by committee members, identifying needs and concerns of constituent schools, and working with their respective VPs to address system-wide issues through their Department.

AVPs are also encouraged to bring forward issues which they feel ASG is positioned to address. VPs and AVPs will assist each other in research, planning, and establishing priorities for the Department.

Example Department-Specific Responsibilities

Internal Operations - review governing documents for errors and inconsistencies, engage in a process review for ASG to fix inefficiencies

Graduate Student Relations - devise strategies to connect graduate student populations with their student governments, coordinate advocacy efforts to attain a living wage for graduate students

Media Outreach - no committee; work on press releases, assist in creating a social media strategy, evaluate how ASG can establish meaningful two-way communication with constituents

Eligibility

Any student in good standing is eligible to apply. Priority will be given to those with relevant work or academic experience and a demonstrated ability to work well with others.

Prospective AVPs should:

  • Be a student in good standing at one of the seventeen UNC System schools, or be an incoming student to one of these schools

  • Have a reliable internet connection and be available for meetings with their corresponding VP weekly

Applicants may submit an application for only one position at a time, but may submit an application for every position in which they are interested. An AVP may serve in only one role.
