Tuition will rise at UNC campuses
By: Jane Stancill, Staff Writer
It won't be the most painful tuition increase recorded among UNC campuses, but college costs at public universities next year will still rise faster than inflation and wages in North Carolina.
Most North Carolina students at UNC campuses will pay about 6 percent more in tuition and fees in the 2007-08 academic year. The UNC Board of Governors approved the increases for the 16 public campuses Friday in Greensboro. A 6.5 percent limit on increases in tuition and most fees, pushed by UNC President Erskine Bowles, kept the hikes lower than in recent years.
The cap, Bowles said, was meant to keep tuition affordable and pressure the legislature to fully meet UNC's needs. "Tuition should always be a secondary source of income," he said.
